Spiniello Companies is a privately held, national, full-service utility contractor. Founded in 1922, we are one of the few companies that fully self-performs all aspects of excavation and specialty pipe rehabilitation. Headquartered in New Jersey, we also have office locations in Maryland, Washington D.C., and California. Spiniello has annual revenues in excess of $150M and performs dozens of projects simultaneously. We currently have over 100 salaried and 300 hourly employees.

Position Objectives and Responsibilities

The Senior Project Manager will provide the overall direction, completion and financial outcome of civil construction projects as directed.  This role will provide oversight with mentoring, coaching, and guidance to junior project managers and project engineers.  The ability to provide senior level leadership at various levels is a critical aspect for this role.  This role will encompass the planning, execution and closeout of multiple project deadlines and budgets, including acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and subcontractors to deliver the specific project action items as referenced within the specifications, drawings and executed contract. 

  • Manage and oversee multiple construction projects while maintaining client base

  • Monitor and provide guidance as it pertains to change orders/bid process to include estimating to provide cost proposals to clients

  • Provide senior level expertise with project managers to secure favorable pricing and contract terms with subcontractors and material vendors

  • Enforce overall Site-Specific Safety Plan

  • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end for multiple projects

  • Define and track overall project scope, milestones, and deliverables in collaboration with the project team and end user

  • Develop, manage and schedule internal staff for all phases of construction as it pertains to Spiniello jobs

  • Ensure corporate policies, procedures and ethical standards are followed by the project managers and engineers

  • Assist with the hiring and recruiting of Project Managers and Engineers

  • Provide overall communication to senior level leadership as it pertains to project expectations and objectives

  • Communicate and meet as needed with project stakeholders on an ongoing basis

  • Provide the necessary planning for the resources needed to achieve project goals

  • Provide oversight and guidance in the preparation of Project Cost Reporting

  • Proactively oversee changes in project scopes, identify potential crises and devise contingency plans

  • Overall responsibility for safety, quality and budget for projects ranging in size

  • Manage direct reports to include General Superintendent, Project Management team, and Safety

  • Periodic reviews of project status reports and ensuring work adheres to contract specifications.

  • Leading and directing the work of others to include subcontractors

  • Effectively communicate of corporate information to the project team as well as well as ensuring project files are organized by project management staff

  • Direct and supervise the work of project administration, project superintendents and engineers to establish operation priorities and maintaining satisfactory relationships

  • Establish/Define/Promote values, expectations and performance standards for team and individual members in accordance with the Spiniello mission, vision, and values

  • Responsible for the overall management of the project management team (e.g., resources, schedule, cost tracking) to ensure complete solutions are delivered on time and within budget

  • Engage with the Purchasing and Fleet departments setting up major equipment and project needs

  • Build, develop and grow customer relationships vital to the success of the Spiniello organization

  • Oversee project reviews with project managers and develop a lesson learned synopsis to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements

  • Spearhead the Safety program in partnership with the Safety team.

  • Hold supervisors accountable for their deliverables

Regional Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Senior Management to develop strategies for cultivating prospects and obtaining work.
  • Responsible for market analysis and evaluation of competition and future bidding opportunities
  • Identify and meet with potential teaming partners
  • Research and develop business case for expansion into new geographic areas or different project types
  • Participate in industry associations, seminars, trade shows and events to develop market awareness.
  • Network with industry professionals to identify opportunities. Serve as lead on RFQ / RFP proposal responses and see them through to completion.
  • Ultimate responsibility for preparing cost estimates and bid documents for construction projects or services
  • Ensures that all contract issues such as MBE, time constraints, special construction methods, etc. are addressed prior to submission of the bid
  • Analyzes estimated vs. actual costs upon project completion
  • Takes input from project managers regarding labor and equipment hours, construction methods, and adjusts estimating cost factors as necessary
  • Reviews budget and project profitability status and goals with supervision and project team as required

Position Requirements and Qualifications

Expert knowledge of Civil Construction, Earthwork, and Utilities construction.  Ability to apply efficient, innovative, and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance and project success.  Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices and standards, processes, and activities.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or comparable experience

  • Strong Civil Construction, Heavy Highway, Underground Utility experience

  • Experienced in reading engineering drawings, takeoffs, owner specifications and ability to understand project scheduling and cost controls.

  • Knowledgeable with local, state and federal municipalities and agencies

  • Experience in managing multiple large complex construction projects

  • Minimum of 10-15 years of project experience in Civil Construction/Underground Utility Construction

  • Familiar with grading, clearing, excavation, drainage, stream restoration, design-build, utilizes and other civil construction scopes

  • Creativity and innovation a must to provide innovative solutions

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interact and collaborate at all levels

  • Must have excellent team building skills with effective communication

  • Strong working knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and Primavera P6 is a plus.

  • Working knowledge of Sage Timberline and HCSS a MUST.

  • Flexibility to travel, work after hours, and or on nights/weekends based on demands of various projects

  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills; detail oriented a must in order to be efficient and have the ability to handle a wide variety of obligations
