The Freemium R&D team oversees the entire user journey on Spotify and ensures we engage with people in innovative ways, every step of the way. Our team grows Spotify’s audience by finding future listeners around the world and delivering the right value to them, at the right time. With research, product development, product design, engineering, and marketing all collaborating in one organization, we’re able to quickly create meaningful features and services for millions of people around the world, resulting in joyful, long-lasting relationships with Spotify.

The Growth team is responsible for driving MAU and subscriber growth for Spotify globally through efforts to gather, retain, covert, and upsell across free and paid user funnels. Those efforts include global scale lifecycle programs, promotional campaigns, as well as campaigns with fully coordinated local market strategies.

We are looking for an expert engineer with a strong data/infra background to join the Growth Team. You will be the first data engineer directly embedded with this growth marketing org and drive the development and maintenance of datasets for user growth campaigns run by the Growth Team. You will work on crafting robust and scalable solutions for marketing campaign datasets, collaborating with data scientists, engineers, and marketing partners across the org and the company. You will play a meaningful role in the success of high impact and forecast critical user growth campaigns and be the founding member of a function that we have the ambition to staff up over time.

What you'll do

  • Own and operate data pipelines generating a number of core datasets for the Growth Team and analytics counterparts
  • Collaborate with various teams to craft a scalable data model that meets the needs of the business
  • Work with innovative data processing frameworks, technologies, and platforms.

Who you are

  • 3 - 5 years of work experience crafting and building highly scalable data pipelines preferably with exposure to Scala, Java or Python, and experience with source code management tools for version control like GitHub, Bitbucket etc.
  • Proficient in SQL based databases, ideally with familiarity of cloud-based data warehousing solutions such as BigQuery
  • You are familiar with distributed computing frameworks, such as Spark, Scio, Hadoop, Dataflow, Beam
  • You understand database operations and can reason about them, including:
  • Indexing and schemas
  • Column store vs row store schemas
  • Groups, joins, and aggregations
  • Experience working multi-functionally with data engineers, data scientists, and marketing managers
  • You are comfortable working in an environment where data ownership and maintenance is distributed across many teams
  • You are able to operate optimally and autonomously across multiple teams in situations of ambiguity, with only high-level direction
  • Bonus if you have worked on supporting an internal marketing organization
  • Computer science knowledge is a plus

Where you'll be

  • You are located in EST or willing to relocate to NYC
  • Prefer to work from home instead? Not a problem! We have plenty of options for your working preferences.
  • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern Standard time zone for collaboration
