Maria Elena Bottazzi has extensive experience in the field of tropical medicine and microbiology. Maria Elena is currently serving as the Division Chief of Pediatric Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine since October 2018. In addition, they hold the position of Associate Dean at the National School of Tropical Medicine and is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. Maria Elena is also the Co-Director of Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development.

Prior to their current role, Bottazzi was a Distinguished Professor in Biology at Baylor University since July 2014. Maria Elena has also served as the Editor in Chief of Current Tropical Medicine Reports at Springer Science+Business Media since 2013.

Before joining Baylor University, Bottazzi held various positions at George Washington University. Maria Elena was the Vice-Chair for Administration in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine from 2005 to 2011. Maria Elena was also an Associate Professor from 2004 to 2011 and an Assistant Professor from 2001 to 2004 in the same department.

Maria Elena Bottazzi has a strong educational background in the field of biology and immunology. Maria Elena began their education at the National Autonomous University of Honduras, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry from 1983 to 1989. Maria Elena then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Molecular Immunology and Experimental Pathology at the University of Florida from 1989 to 1995. Following this, Bottazzi completed Post-doctoral Training in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine from 1995 to 1998, and at the University of Pennsylvania from 1998 to 2001.
