After obtaining her doctorate in law from the University of Zurich, Ursula Gut-Winterberger held various positions in the private sector between 1986 and 2006. Among other posts, she was a member of the management team at the major bank Credit Suisse and was Vice Director of the life insurance group Swiss Life. Ursula Gut-Winterberger began her political career as a local councillor and mayor (Gemeindepräsidentin) of Küsnacht in the Canton of Zurich. Between 2006 and 2015 she was a member of Zurich’s cantonal government, serving first as its Construction Director and then as Finance Director from 2007 onwards.
