Mike Freedman is Vice President of Communications at SRI, overseeing the institute’s internal and external marketing and communications. In his role, Freedman drives visibility for SRI’s impactful work and world-changing solutions with a focus on communicating with employees and customers as well as building the SRI brand.
Freedman’s expertise is in developing and launching communications strategies and communicating complex ideas and innovations to diverse global audiences.
Prior to joining SRI, Freedman most recently served as Stanford University’s Associate Dean for Communications and Community Affairs at the School of Engineering where he oversaw all communications, marketing and community-building activities at the university’s largest school by number of students. Previously, he led content and editorial initiatives at Stanford Graduate School of Business and, earlier, oversaw public affairs at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation.
Prior to working at Stanford, Freedman was the Europe, Asia and Latin America editor at Newsweek magazine. Earlier, he was the London-based Europe bureau chief at Forbes. He has been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic and other publications. Freedman has also spoken widely at industry conferences and professional development workshops on digital media and storytelling, brand marketing and principles of inclusive communications and design. In addition, he has taught or co-taught writing, journalism and critical thinking to students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Freedman received his M.S. in Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his B.A. in Religion at Emory University.
