Dr. Travis (she/her) is professor and chairperson of English. She specializes in U.S. Literature and Culture, Gender Studies, Trauma and Vulnerability Studies, and Digital Pedagogy. She is the author and editor of five books: Gender and American Literature, co-edited with Jean M. Lutes (Cambridge University Press, 2022); Danger and Vulnerability in Nineteenth-Century American Literature: Crash and Burn (2018); Teaching with Digital Humanities: Tools and Methods for Nineteenth-Century American Literature, co-edited with Jessica DeSpain (2018); Wounded Hearts: Masculinity, Law, and Literature in American Culture (2005); and Boys Don’t Cry: Rethinking Masculinity and Emotion in the U.S, co-edited with Milette Shamir (2002).
At St. John’s, Dr. Travis has been honored with the McNair Scholars Program Mentor of the Year, the Legacy Award from the Society for Multicultural Affairs, and a St. John’s University’s Outstanding Achievement Award. She is the recipient of numerous research grants, including: the Humanities Institute Grant from the University of Connecticut, the American Association of University Women American Fellows Grant, The Newberry Library Monticello Grant, and archival research grants from the Huntington Library, the Library Company, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
