Neil Hurley

Deputy Government Statistician & Deputy Chief Executive, Strategy, People & Resources at Stats NZ

Neil joined Stats NZ in October 2022 on secondment from the Ministry for the Environment. His role enables Stats NZ to focus and position itself for ongoing success through effective, joined-up functions and leads strategy and planning, cultural change, leadership and people capability the organisation. He is also responsible for helping drive effective governance, investment decision-making, and financial maturity across Stats NZ.

A public servant for over 20 years, Neil has held leadership roles at the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Justice, as well as several senior leadership roles at the Ministry for the Environment, most recently Chief Information Officer and Director, People and Capability. His current role at the Ministry for the Environment is Director Evidence, Data and Insights, responsible for the delivery of New Zealand’s environmental reporting programme in partnership with Stats NZ, legislative change of the Environmental Reporting Act and work to improve New Zealand’s system of environmental monitoring.
