Stephen Lockwood, a Senior Adviser at StoneTurn, brings over two decades of experience preventing and detecting financial crime as part of the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), at the world’s second largest metals and mining corporation and within law enforcement. He is an expert in financial crime risk, investigations and compliance. Stephen is currently part of the StoneTurn team providing remediation advice to a Northern European Bank with regard to the Bank’s anti-money laundering program.

Before his work with StoneTurn, Stephen served as Director of Investigations and Special Projects, for the world’s second largest mining company, where he led an FCPA/UKBA internal investigation, involving multiple regulators and law enforcement from the U.K., U.S. and Australia. The matters under investigation pertained to activities across West Africa, Australia, and Europe. Stephen also supported external counsel during an SEC litigation regarding an alleged fraud relating to activities across east Africa and Australia and led a strategic review of the organization’s global compliance risk framework, including third-party due diligence, policies and procedures, and financial crime frameworks. Stephen conducted several smaller, but highly sensitive in-house investigations, managed regulatory investigations, in-house e-Discovery and Digital Forensics teams, and was the stakeholder manager for several external vendors.

Earlier in his career, Stephen worked in the Financial Crime Specialist Supervision division of the FCA, where he led supervisory visits as part of the Proactive AML Program. At the FCA, Stephen conducted financial crime system and control reviews of high-risk firms, including, but not limited to: AML, anti-bribery and corruption (ABC), know your customer / supplier (KYC/KYS), and financial crime systems and controls such as CDD, EDD, sanctions and SARs. He also served as a Forensic Investigator in the FCA’s Wholesale Enforcement division, where he conducted regulatory investigations under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, and criminal investigations under the Criminal Justice Act 1993 and Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

He began his career in law enforcement and served as a Financial Investigator in the Serious and Organized Crime Unit of the Thames Valley Police.
