Sensor Project Lead at Summit Nanotech

Shafiul Azam, Ph.D. has extensive work experience in the fields of optics engineering, research, method development and validation, and teaching. In 2022, they began working as an Optics Engineer for Summit Nanotech. From 2018 to present, they have been a Research Associate at the University of Victoria, where they have managed 5 interdisciplinary research projects simultaneously, led collaborative research with ASAsoft (Canada) Inc., conducted research with FT Synthetics (Surrey, BC), designed and constructed analytical instruments, and investigated the structures of solid/aqueous interfaces. Additionally, they have been a Method Development and Validation Scientist for the Vancouver Island Drug Checking Project since 2018. From 2014 to 2018, they were the Principal Investigator (Materials and Methods Lab) and Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, where they planned and executed 10+ research projects, developed a one-step electrochemical method for the dispersion of nickel, synthesized manganese oxides, and was awarded 3 grants. From 2013 to 2012, they were a Research Fellow at The Canadian Centre for Clean Coal/Carbon and Mineral Processing Technologies (C5MPT) and a Student Researcher at Centre for Oil Sands Innovation (COSI), University of Alberta, respectively. From 2008 to 2005, they were a Research Assistant and Safety Officer at the Gibbs-Davis Lab, Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta, a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Chemistry, and a Research Assistant and Consultant at the Department of Chemistry at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology.

Shafiul Azam, Ph.D. has an extensive educational background. Shafiul obtained a BSc in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University in 2004, a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Chemistry from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2008, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 2013. In addition, they have obtained certifications in CPR/AED/First Aid from the Canadian Red Cross in 2022, Biosafety Awareness and Laser Safety from OHSE Uvic in 2018, Radiation Safety Training from the Department of Environmental Health and Safety, U of Alberta in 2012, Basic Fire Extinguisher Training from Spectrum Safety Service in 2011, Canada Safety Council Defensive Driving Course from the Canada Safety Council in 2011, and ESET Cyber Security Awareness Training Certificate from ESET North America in 2022.
