Partha Sampathkumar

Principal Scientist at Surrozen

Partha Sampathkumar has a diverse work experience in the field of structural biology and biologics development. Partha started their career as a Senior Research Fellow at HHMI and the University of Washington, where they focused on crystallizing the Peroxisomal Targeting Signal 1 (PTS1) binding domain of Trypanosoma brucei PEX5. Partha determined crystal structures of T. brucei PEX5 in complex with PTS1 peptides, identifying a unique hydrophobic pocket as a potential inhibitor binding site.

Partha then joined SGX Pharmaceuticals as a Post Doctoral Scientist for a brief period before moving to Eli Lilly and Company as a Post-doctoral Scientist. At Eli Lilly, they determined the high-resolution crystal structures of PHR domains of Mouse Phr-1, leading to collaborations to explore loss of function mutations.

Following their post-doctoral work, Partha worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine as an Associate (non-tenure Faculty), focusing on determining the structure of a 110 kDa N-terminal domain of S. cerevisiae Nup192. Partha then worked at the New York Structural Biology Center as a Scientist, where they extensively applied the baculovirus/insect-cell system for protein expression and performed gene cloning and protein production.

Partha then moved to SKIRBALL INSTITUTE OF BIOMOLECULAR MEDICINE, NYU as a Research Scientist, before joining Surrozen. At Surrozen, they held multiple positions, starting as a Scientist II, then progressing to Senior Scientist, and currently as a Principal Scientist. Their roles at Surrozen involved structural biology, biologics developability and analytics, structure guided antibody engineering, antigen/protein expression, purification, and characterization. Partha also showcased leadership, workplace culture, and management skills during this time.

Overall, Partha Sampathkumar has gained extensive experience in structural biology, protein expression, purification, and characterization throughout their career, contributing valuable research in various roles and organizations.

Partha Sampathkumar's education history includes a Ph.D. in Biophysics and Structural Biology from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which they pursued from 1994 to 2001. Prior to that, from 1992 to 1994, they completed a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Chemistry at The American College, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India. Further, from 1989 to 1992, they obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics from Loyola College, University of Madras, Chennai, India.
