Shey Dorji

Special Project Lead at Symbrosia

Shey Dorji began their career in 2018 as a System Specialist at UCSB's Research Experience and Education Facility (REEF). In this role, they were responsible for aquaria plumbing, animal husbandry, temperate and tropical species identification, and science education. Shey also worked as an Undergraduate Researcher at the UCSB Department of Earth Science. Here, they contributed to multiple NSF funded oceanographic projects that involved both lab work and field work investigating the metabolisms and metagenomics of microbial communities. In 2020, Shey Dorji joined The Cultured Abalone Farm as an Aquaculture Technician. In this role, they engaged with all aspects of the business from animal husbandry to product packaging and sales. In 2021, they began working as a Special Project Lead and Research Assistant at Symbrosia. In this role, they created novel cultivation and propagation strategies for the commercial production of Asparagopsis taxiformis, a species of red macroalgae that has been shown to cut ruminant methane emissions by over 80%. Finally, in 2022, Shey Dorji joined Parley for the Oceans as an OceanUprise, where they worked on international collaboration with youth from all over the globe on strategies to better amplify the voices fighting for save the environment.

Shey Dorji attended UC Santa Barbara from 2017 to 2021, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Biology/Biological Sciences and a Minor in Spatial Science. In 2019, Shey obtained an Open Water I Scuba Certification from NAUI Worldwide.
