Lee Josephson's work experience begins in 1988 as the Chief Scientific Officer at Advanced Magnetics (now AMAG Pharmaceuticals). During this time, they oversaw the development of magnetic nanoparticle imaging agents and played a role in the approval and filing of various NDAs. Lee also managed particle characterization, toxicology, pharmacology, quality control, scale-up, formulation, and intellectual property matters.
In 1998, Josephson joined Massachusetts General Hospital as an Associate Professor of Harvard Medical School. Lee has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers in medical imaging, magnetic particles, and magnetic particle assays. While still holding the position of Associate Professor, they handed over their laboratory and grants to junior scientists. Lee is also a co-inventor on more than 20 US patents.
In 2006, Josephson became a co-founder and consultant at T2 Biosystems, where they pioneered the development of Magnetic Relaxation Switch and magnetic resonance in vitro assays.
Since 2015, Josephson has been a partner at MedChemImaging LLC, a company specializing in medicinal chemistry for developing SPECT or PET imaging agents to support therapeutic drug development. The company synthesizes libraries of new compounds and provides radiolabeled precursors from the literature that are otherwise unavailable.
Lee Josephson attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1963 to 1968 and obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry. Afterward, from 1970 to 1975, Lee pursued further studies at Stony Brook University, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Biology.
