Event Assistant / Office Handyperson

Operations · Washington, United States

Job description

Taoti Creative (www.taoti.com) is a marketing agency on Barracks Row in DC.  We also own and operate an event venue called The 507 (www.the507Events.com) in our same building (they are technically the same company operating under two different brands.)  The 507 does events such Mitzvahs, corporate conferences, wedding receptions, concerts, parties, galas, etc.  Really, just about anything up to 400 people.  We are looking for a Jack or Jill of all trades who can primarily help support our events business, but also provide day-to-day facilities support for Taoti as well.  We are open to full time (with full benefits) or part time (hourly).  One very important requirement is that you are very flexible on working hours/days.  As you might imagine, most of the events are in the evenings or on weekends, and we need someone who can be there for those events.  That will frequently mean late nights, Saturdays and Sundays, holidays, etc.  (If you prefer full time employment, when you do work outside of normal business hours, you will be able to ‘trade days’ during the work week so that you maintain roughly a 40-hour work week.)  Also, this is a somewhat physical job, as there is often setup that includes moving furniture, setting up tables/chairs, and moving other heavy objects.  Beyond that, the types of tasks you’ll be expected to do are all over the place.  Note that we already have people that do all of these things, so we don’t expect any one person to be able to do everything below.  You will be joining a team and providing additional capacity and backup. The event stuff is the primary need, followed by the handy stuff, followed by the clerical/marketing stuff.  That said, the more of this stuff that you are able to do, the more versatile you can be, which of course has a lot of value to our team.

Event Stuff

  • Setup tables/chairs before an event (and then put them away in our storage closet afterwards)

  • Be available during events for whatever might come up.  This includes working directly with the customers.  Sometimes, you may be on your own for smaller events.

  • Deal with receiving and returning packages

  • Set up a bar, lights, A/V, décor, event features, etc.

  • Clean.  While we do have professional cleaners, you will provide cleaning support before, during, and after events.  That could range from taking out overflowing trash, to sweeping a floor, to cleaning some windows, to cleaning up a bathroom, or scrubbing a wall that the cleaners don’t typically do, etc.  There is always something to clean here—particularly some of the deep cleaning that the regular cleaners often over look.

Handyperson Stuff

  • Paint

  • Simple carpentry / fabrication

  • Assemble furniture

  • Simple repairs

  • Light electrical / plumbing

  • Replace AC filters

  • Hang things on the wall

  • Decorate the office

  • Organize things

  • Clean out ‘junk rooms’

  • Run errands / local pickup/deliveries

Clerical / Marketing Stuff

  • Post pictures on social media (and other social media support)

  • Send out newsletters

  • Help create marketing material

  • Show our space to potential customers

  • Work out pricing, contracts, etc.

  • Communicate with customers (respond to initial inquires, etc.)

  • Order goods and services / manage vendors

  • Create simple signage for digital or print

Again, we want to stress that this job will require some late nights—often until 2am after a party on Saturday, or coming in on Sunday to clean up after said party.  Please consider your other life obligations and make sure that working odd hours won’t be problematic for you.  We do have a preference for local people who can easily be on-site with short notice in the event something unforeseen comes up.

If all this sounds good, we’d love to hear more about your experience, skills, and what things you think you’d be best at (also, anything from the above list that you can’t or won’t do.  That’s not a deal breaker—just good to know where your lines are drawn up front.)

Applicants who pass initial screening will be invited in to see the space and chat in more detail.  We will likely do some trial tasks/events (paid, of course) before making any final decisions or offers.  Again, we are open to full time and part time roles, so please indicate your preference in your application.

We look forward to hearing from you!
