Shailesh Chandra is Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited and a member of the Tata Motors Executive Committee.
Shailesh began his career with Tata Motors as a graduate engineer in 1995. A Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious llT Varanasi, he also has a management degree from SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. In addition to this, he is also a Fulbright- Nehru Master’s Fellow from Carnegie Mellon University – Tepper School of Business.
During his tenure with Tata Group, he has effectively shouldered multiple responsibilities at Tata Motors and Tata Sons. In 2018, he assumed a responsibility of President, Electric Mobility Business & Corporate Strategy and established Tata Motors as a leader in emerging Electric Mobility space in India. In 2020, he was given the baton to run the Passenger Vehicle Business along with the EV business.
In Jan’22, he assumed the responsibility of Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, subsidiaries of Tata Motors formed in FY22. Along with in-depth understanding of the business, he brought host of functional and general management skills in to the role at Tata Motors. He has driven alignment, accountability and commitment in the team to remarkably turnaround the business and re-establish Tata Motors as 3’° largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in India, a feat achieved after a decade. Under his distinguished leadership, passenger vehicle business has grown 4X (vis- a-vis FY20) and electric vehicle business has established a formidable leadership in the Indian market with 85% market share (in FY23) despite multiple global challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shailesh was recognized as ‘Man of the Year 2020’ bg Autocar Professional in Dec’21, as ’Automobile CEO of the Year’ bg TopGear in Mar’22, as ’Business Leader of the Year’ bg CarandBike in Mar’22, and as ’Automotive Personality of the Year’ bg FASTER in Jul’22 for restarting the engine of growth and turning around Tata Motors in difficult times of COVID pandemic. He was nominated amongst top five finalist for the prestigious ’World Car Person of the Year 2022’.
