James Breen

Chief Data Scientist At Black Ochre Data Labs (indigenous Genomics) at Telethon Kids Institute

James Breen has extensive work experience in the field of bioinformatics and genomics. James is currently working as the Chief Data Scientist at Black Ochre Data Labs (Indigenous Genomics) at the Telethon Kids Institute since 2022. James also holds the position of Associate Professor at The Australian National University from 2022.

Prior to these roles, James was the Core Bioinformatics Manager at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) from 2018 to 2022. James was responsible for managing bioinformatics operations at the Adelaide BioMed City precinct, which includes the University of Adelaide's Medical School and SAHMRI. Additionally, they worked as a group leader in Computational Biology at the Robinson Research Institute (RRI) at SAHMRI, conducting research on genomics in Reproductive and Developmental Biology.

Before joining SAHMRI, James worked at the University of Adelaide from 2013 to 2022. James served as the Core Facility Leader (Bioinformatics) at the Robinson Research Institute, where they led the bioinformatics facilities. James also worked as a Research Associate at the university.

James has also held positions at the South Australian Genomics Centre (SAGC) as the Head of Bioinformatics from 2020 to 2021, the Australian Genome Research Facility (AGRF) as a Bioinformatics Officer from 2012 to 2013, the University of Zurich as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from 2009 to 2012, and Murdoch University where they completed their PhD in Bioinformatics from 2006 to 2009.

James Breen pursued their education at Murdoch University. James completed their Bachelor of Science (honours) degree in Molecular Biology from 2000 to 2005. Later, they pursued a PhD in Bioinformatics from 2006 to 2009 at the same institution.
