Full-time · Los Angeles, US
One postdoctoral position is available at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI). The TIBI is developing ‘personalized’ solutions that utilize micro- and nanoscale technologies to enable a range of therapies for organ failure, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. To enable this vision, the institute works closely with clinicians, including interventional radiologists, cardiologists, and surgeons. Headed by Dr. Khademhosseini, the institute has numerous projects, including using patient-derived cells to engineer artificial tissues and cell-based therapies; organ-on-a-chip systems that aim to mimic human physiology and pathology to enable patient-specific evaluation of drug candidates; and novel biomaterials as sealants and adhesives. For this particular job opening, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow who can work on synthesizing and engineering functional biomaterials and tissue-engineered scaffolds.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or related disciplines.
• A strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• The fellow is expected to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment and drive scientific and technical innovation with other members of the group and the Terasaki research community.
• Outstanding communication skills are required, including oral and written presentations.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in hydrogel synthesis and characterization, cell culture, 3D bioprinting, microfabrication, and animal experiments is desired and a considerable plus.
• Experience in immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and gene/protein expression is required.
• Experience with cell cultures (immortalized cells, primary cells, and stem cells) and cell characterization (microscopic imaging, flow cytometry, and gene/protein expression).
• Experience with experimental design, microscopic imaging, and data analysis is required.
• Knowledge of cancer biology is a considerable plus.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct research in the field of biomaterials and tissue engineering, which includes synthesis and characterization of biocompatible polymers, hydrogels, electrospun microfibers, and metal scaffolds for a variety of applications, including the development of heterogeneous bioinks for 3D bioprinting and 3D cell culture, development of biomaterials with applications in regenerative medicine, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications, for funded research grants (NIH, DoD, Private Foundations, and Industry Sponsored Research).
• Propose creative and novel solutions to current biomedical problems by developing hypotheses, designing experimental plans, carrying out experiments, analyzing results, and writing research papers.
• Keep track of the current literature in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and related fields and write comprehensive review papers.
• Engage in the dissemination of the research in regular group meetings, internal seminars, national/international scientific conferences, and journal publications.
• Conceive ideas for grant proposals, submit postdoctoral fellowship applications, and assist faculty in grant proposal writing (NIH, NSF, and DoD).
• Manage other researchers, including trainees, junior fellows, and visiting biomaterials and tissue engineering students.
• Engage in appropriate training of lab personnel and lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering supplies as the principal investigators require.
• Work closely with other members of TIBI to conduct and carry out the research, share research ideas, and come up with solutions for scientific/clinical problems.
Applications – Please include the following documents in ONE DOCX or PDF File:
• Research statement, including a summary of previous research experiences, along with motivation and specific fit for the mission of the TIBI. Suggested length: 1-3 pages
• Curriculum Vitae
• Names and contact information of at least three references.
