José R. Lizárraga

Senior Innovation And Creative Advisor at The Algorithmic Justice League

José R. Lizárraga, PhD, currently serves as Project Manager at Online at BSE and Visiting Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, overseeing a $1M grant focused on innovative online learning approaches. Additionally, José is Co-Principal Investigator at California State University-Sacramento, leading a project promoting Computer Science careers for girls and fems of color, and advises the Algorithmic Justice League on awareness campaigns against algorithmic harm. As a faculty member at the University of Colorado Boulder, José teaches courses on the intersection of media, technology, and learning, while also directing the Speculative Fabulation Lab. Previous roles include CEO and Artistic Director of RuPawl The Doggie Drag Queen, earning two Webby Awards for advocacy in queer and drag culture, and various academic positions, including Associated Researcher at UC Berkeley's MacArthur Connected Learning Research Network. José holds a PhD in Learning Sciences and Human Development from the University of California, Berkeley, a Master's Degree from Stanford University, and a BA from California College of the Arts.
