The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative communities with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish. 

The Development Officer, Major Gifts will join a growing team and will help raise critical funds necessary to transform lives at The Bowery Mission. The Development Officer will serve as the face of The Bowery Mission with a clearly defined caseload of supporters, developing and stewarding one-on-one relationships with them, working in concert with a passionate team of fundraisers to maximize direct contact with major donors and prospects to inspire a wide range of people to join The Bowery Mission, growing  the network of support and level of engagement of individuals and groups. The development officer is an expert in building one-on-one relationships with donors and cares deeply about the men, women, and children that The Bowery Mission serves.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage a caseload of donors with the capacity to make gifts of $5,000 and above. Execute a tailored strategy for each donor through phone calls, correspondence, face-to-face meetings, volunteer engagements and tours.
  • Achieve activity metrics which serve to meet the revenue goal such as meaningful touchpoints, meetings, solicitations and gifts.
  • Become an expert in telling The Bowery Mission story, getting to know key staff members, programs, and guests and clients in order to articulate the case for support.
  • Identify, research and cultivate donor prospects utilizing research tools, Bowery Mission networks and events, external events, and current donor relationships.
  • Actively participate as a member of the major gifts team in sharing resources, supporting team goals, and collaborating in a variety of ways.

Qualifications:

  • Embrace the organization’s Statement of Faith.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two years' fundraising or direct sales experience (or closely-related skills)
  • Ability to distill complex information into coherent and compelling content both verbally and in writing.
  • High integrity and ability to develop trust-based relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, proven networking skills and a genuine desire to connect deeply with people from a diversity of backgrounds, such as high net-worth individuals and those experiencing homelessness.
  • Confidence, presence, and intellectual curiosity needed to promote The Bowery Mission.
  • Ability to establish priorities, navigate overlapping timelines and meet deadlines.
  • Growing passion for those experiencing homelessness, hunger and poverty.
  • Professional and positive attitude.
  • Ability to travel within the NYC metro area and participate in donor-focused events held on evenings and weekends.

 Preferred:

  • At least two years of donor-facing fundraising experience.

  • Knowledge of nonprofits and philanthropy.

  • High proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office software.

  • Proficiency with CRM databases.

Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $76,000 to $86,000 per year
