Joan Wisner-Carlson has a diverse range of work experience. Joan started their career as an Education Beat Reporter for The Times-Journal Company in 1988 and later became the London Correspondent for Space News. Joan then worked as an Associate Editor for Space News before transitioning into freelance writing. As a freelancer, Joan wrote articles for various publications, including Johns Hopkins Medicine, CTY's Cogito.org, and The Baltimore Sun.
In 2005, Joan joined Johns Hopkins University, Center for Talented Youth as an Assistant Director. Joan successfully secured over $1 million in foundation and corporate grants for scholarships and other projects. Joan also cultivated relationships with foundation program officers.
Joan later moved to Johns Hopkins University as an Associate Director, where they managed relationships with top foundations supporting engineering, medical, and science research. Joan worked closely with faculty to secure $9 million in grant awards from foundations.
From 2012 to 2015, Joan served as the Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Joan was involved in securing private support for a $6.5 million historic restoration and collaborated with the Dean of Nursing to seek support for a new entry-level BSN program.
Joan then joined the National Park Foundation in 2015 as the Manager of Foundation Relations. Joan played a key role in exceeding the $500 million goal for the Centennial Campaign for America's National Parks, securing support for the "Every Kid in a Park" initiative and other projects benefiting Title 1 schools.
In 2018, Joan returned to Sheppard Pratt as the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations. Joan later became the Senior Director before leaving in 2022 to join The Children's Inn at NIH as the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.

Joan Wisner-Carlson completed their undergraduate studies at Kalamazoo College from 1978 to 1982, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Following this, they pursued their interest in Journalism at Northwestern University, where they obtained a Master of Science in Journalism from 1982 to 1983.
