Josephine Johnston is an accomplished academic and researcher with extensive experience in medical law and ethics. Currently serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Otago since December 2020, Josephine teaches medical law and ethics to students in medical, pharmacy, and dental programs. Josephine has been a Senior Research Scholar and Visiting Researcher at The Hastings Center since July 2003, where a significant focus has been on grant-funded research regarding ethical, legal, social, and policy issues in science and medicine. Additionally, Josephine led The Hastings Center's Research Department from 2012 to 2022, collaborating with leadership to influence policy and public discourse. Josephine's prior roles include Lecturer at Columbia University, where a course on "Law and Bioethics" was developed for the Masters in Bioethics program, and legal positions at Clifford Chance and Chapman Tripp. Educational qualifications include a BA, LLB (hons), and MBHL from the University of Otago, as well as prior education at Queens High School.
