James Lee is a prominent academic currently serving as the Yan Ai Foundation Chair Professor of Social Science and Chair Professor of Humanities at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where also holds the position of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science. Lee has extensive experience in higher education, previously holding significant roles including Changjiang Scholar in Sociology at Peking University and Professor of History at the University of Michigan, where served as the Frederick Huetwell Chair Professor of Chinese History. Additionally, Lee's academic career includes various positions at the California Institute of Technology. Lee holds a PhD in History from the University of Chicago, where studies extended from 1974 to 1983, and earned a BA in History from Yale University.
