J. Scott Lowman has a diverse work experience in the field of biology and technology. From 2014 to the present, they have been the Director of Research at The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, focusing on improving plant productivity by integrating advances in biology and technology. Prior to this, they served as the Chief Scientist and Senior Scientist at the same organization. From 2014 to 2016, they worked as a Post Doctoral Scientist in Robotics and Imaging. In 2009, J. Scott Lowman was a PhD student at Virginia Tech, specializing in Molecular Plant Microbe Interactions. Additionally, they co-founded and served on the board of directors for Lynchburg Grows Urban Farm and Job Training Center, a non-profit urban farm that aims to provide sustainable food production and skill development opportunities for individuals with special needs.
J. Scott Lowman obtained their Bachelor's degree in Biology from Virginia Tech from 1990 to 1994. J. Scott then pursued a Masters in Molecular Biology from William & Mary between 1997 and 1999. Later, they accomplished their highest level of education by earning a Doctor of Philosophy degree, specializing in Molecular Plant Microbe Interactions, from Virginia Tech spanning from 2009 to 2014.

Core focus areas include research that provides a clear path to commercialization, advanced learning opportunities where education meets experience, and economic development through conferencing and a partnership with the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance. It is located in scenic and historic Pittsylvania County on the VA/NC state line, within a short drive of Roanoke, Greensboro and Raleigh.
