Terry Threadgold

Treasurer at The Learned Society of Wales

Professor Emerita of Communication and Cultural Studies, and formerly: Pro Vice-Chancellor, Cardiff University

Terry has an international reputation as a feminist scholar and researcher and for her interdisciplinary work in feminist discourse analysis and critical theory.

She was educated at the University of Sydney where her Masters Honours Research Thesis was awarded the University Medal. She completed her PhD at Monash University. She was appointed to Cardiff University as research professor in Communications and Cultural Studies in the run-up to the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. She retired from Cardiff University in 2012.

Terry’s positions include Acting Head of the Department of Early English Literature and Language, Sydney University (1991 – 1992), Professor and Head of the Department of English, Cultural Studies and Drama, Monash University (1993 – 1995), and Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University (2003 – 2007). She was associate dean of Graduate Studies (1995-1997) and Acting Dean of Arts at Monash (1998-1999).

She was Pro Vice Chancellor at Cardiff University from 2007-2012. During this period, she also acted as Head of the Schools of English, Communication and Philosophy and History, Archaeology and Religion. She was the university equality champion and the senior academic lead on the university’s Positive Working Environment, Athena Swan, Investors in People and Stonewall Workplace initiatives, achieving success for the university in all these areas. She has been a member of Council at Monash and Cardiff Universities and a trustee and chair of charitable organisations in Wales.

In all of these contexts she has had extensive experience of managing large budgets, human resources and the governance involved in their financial and academic viability.

Terry was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (LSW) in 2015 and elected a member of the LSW Council in 2016. As a member of the LSW Council she chaired a Review of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Learned Society (2017-19). She is currently the Society’s Treasurer.
