Maria Castro

Maria Castro currently serves as the Jacques & Natasha Gelman Associate Curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a position held since September 2025. Prior to this role, Maria worked at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) from 2018 to October 2025, where responsibilities included serving as both the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Associate Curator of Painting and Sculpture and Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture. Earlier experience includes a tenure as the Leonard A. Lauder Predoctoral Research Fellow in Modern Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2016 to 2018, and a Graduate Intern at Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh from August 2014 to June 2016. Maria's educational background comprises a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in History of Art and Architecture, a Master of Arts (MA) in History of Art and Architecture, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History of Art and Architecture, History, and Italian, all obtained from the University of Pittsburgh between 2009 and 2020.
