Colin McCartney

Head, Department of Anesthesiology at The Ottawa Hospital

Colin McCartney trained in medicine at the University of Edinburgh and then completed anesthesia and pain medicine training in Scotland before going to Toronto in 1999 for a fellowship in regional anesthesia and pain medicine. From 2000-2006 he was a staff anesthetist and director of the regional anesthesia fellowship program at Toronto Western Hospital and from 2006 to 2014 was based at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto where he directed a multidisciplinary research team. He has published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals especially in relation to regional anesthesia and pain medicine and is an Editor of the journal Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and Associate Editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia. He recently completed a Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh but has also supervised and co-supervised many graduate students, fellows, and residents in their own research in the last 15 years. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine where he chairs the committee on research.

From September 2014 Dr. McCartney was appointed as Head of Anesthesiology at The Ottawa Hospital, Chair of Anesthesiology at University of Ottawa, and Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
