Naleen Naupaka Andrade

Naleen Naupaka Andrade, MD is the Executive Vice President of Native Hawaiian Health and Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion And Social Justice (DEIJ) Officer at The Queen’s Health System (QHS).

QHS is a nonprofit corporation that was established to provide expanded health care capabilities to the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin. Although established in 1985, QHS’ legacy of caring for the people of Hawaii date back to 1859, when King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma founded The Queen’s Hospital to “stay the wasting hand,” to stem the tide of diseases during a time when epidemics were sweeping the islands.

Today, QHS is Hawaii’s oldest and preeminent family of health care-related companies that includes four hospitals on three islands, including The Queen’s Medical Center (formerly known as The Queen’s Hospital), a 575-bed acute care facility that is the state’s only Level I trauma center; more than 7,000 employees; a diagnostic laboratory; a home care agency; ambulatory care facilities; and more than 1,500 affiliated physicians and providers in its statewide network.

Dr. Andrade leads Queen’s transformative work within its Native Hawaiian Health and DEIJ programs, and she will spearhead organization-wide implementation of Queen’s initiatives in these key areas. Dr. Andrade’s role includes working in collaboration with other health care and community-based organizations to improve the health and well-being of Native Hawaiians and all the people of Hawai‘i.

Dr. Andrade most recently served as a professor with tenure in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hawai’i’s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) where she completed the Imi Ho’ola Premedical Program and earned her medical degree. Dr. Andrade also served as a Psychiatry & Behavioral Health Business Plan Leader and Liaison in the work to establish an academic partnership between JABSOM’s Department of Psychiatry and Queen’s Behavioral Health Service Line.

Previous positions for Dr. Andrade have included serving as the Director of the National Center on Indigenous Hawaiian Behavioral Health as well as a Clinical Teaching Services Development Liaison for JABSOM and University Health Partners. In addition to her medical education and training, Dr. Andrade received an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Hawai’i at Hilo and anticipates receiving a Master of Divinity from Chicago Theological Institute in May 2025.

Dr. Andrade has extensive leadership service within her profession at the local, state and national levels. She served as the first Native Hawaiian Chair of Psychiatry for UH JABSOM, the Vice Chair of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the President of the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Andrade is a Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of The American Psychiatric Association and has received numerous awards and honors during her successful career.

Her many community service commitments over the years have included serving as a temporary trustee and governance advisor to the King Lunalilo Trust and Home; chair of The Queen’s Health Systems Board of Trustees and as a trustee for the Queen Emma Foundation, Molokai General Hospital, Queen’s Medical Center, and the Hawaii Medical Library; member of the Kamehameha Schools advisory board; and advisor for the Hale Ola Ho’opakolea (a Native Hawaiian community-based cultural healing center) and the Gibson Foundation (a non-profit for Native Hawaiians seeking to acquire housing). Additionally, she is a Minister and Member in Discernment for Kahikolu Congregational Church, Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ.
