James Gimzewski FRS has a diverse work experience spanning several prestigious organizations and roles. james started their career as a Post Doc at the University of Zurich in 1981. james then joined IBM in 1983 as a Group Leader in the IBM Research Division and later became a Group Leader at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where they worked for more than 18 years. james also served as a Consultant at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics from 2001 to 2008. In 2001, they became a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Director of the Nano & Pico Characterization Core Facility of the California NanoSystems Institute. james is currently the Science Director of the Art|Sci Center at UCLA and a Principal Investigator and Satellites Co-Director of the WPI Center for Materials NanoArchitectonics in Japan. In 2008, they took on the role of PI and Joint satellite Director at the National Institute for Materials Science. Additionally, they served as a manager at the California Nanosystems Institute.

James Gimzewski FRS completed their undergraduate education at the University of Strathclyde, where they earned a BScHHins degree in Pure and Applied Chemistry from 1969 to 1974. Later, they pursued their postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Zurich from 1980 to 1983, focusing on plasma-surfaces.
