Summary Description

Under the supervision of the Preconstruction Manager performs various tasks necessary to evaluate bid requests, prepare bid estimates, write proposals, perform complex design functions and maintain customer contact required to secure new business.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M safety policies and procedures.

  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.

  • Complies with customer/jobsite safety policy and procedures.

  • Produces accurate estimates that enable Tri-M to obtain profitable contracts.

  • Performs take-offs of electrical components, branch circuits, feeders, raceways, dimensions etc. within estimating software.

  • Meets with potential customers and/or representatives to review and define project scope.

  • Develops and writes detailed proposals for presentation to customer

  • Attends pre-bid meetings and evaluates job site conditions.

  • Ensures the latest drawings are utilized in the preparation of the bid estimate.

  • Follow-up with customer to obtain market intelligence and competitive pricing information.

  • Establishes priorities to meet essential deadlines.

  • Reviews the successful bid with Project Managers to establish work scope and methods used on project.

  • Prepares requisitions on long lead items for Project Managers.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments and techniques in the electrical construction trade and determines viable alternate methods of construction.

  • Within established department guidelines, negotiate pricing levels to secure contracts.

  • Reviews job cost data generated by accounting system and recommends adjustments in estimating procedures and pricing.

  • Logs bid information.

  • Attends job meetings when required.

  • Provides input during pre-bid strategy meetings.

  • Prices various electrical components as needed.

  • Recommends improved methods of operation.

Job Qualifications 

Skills/Educational Requirements:

  • High school education or equivalent, some higher education desirable

  • Minimum of six (6) years experience as an electrical construction estimator

  • Six (6) years of lineman/substation experience preferred but not required

  • Experience estimating various substation voltages from 34.5kV and above

  • Experience with transmission/substation scada installation.

  • Experience with substation relays.

  • Experience with all transmission/distribution poles and wire construction.  Overhead and underground single to three phase construction. Voltages ranging from 4kV and above.

  • Ability to organize and administer multiple projects with good attention to detail

  • Good understanding of blueprints and electrical drawings

  • Familiarity with Trimble Accubid Anywhere Estimating software desirable.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and math skills

  • Strong computer capabilities, including word processor, spreadsheet and database

  • Must be confident and decisive, self-motivated.

  • Ability to conceptualize finished jobs

  • Working knowledge of National Electrical Code

  • Good customer service skills

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to effectively work under pressure

Physical Requirements:

  • Working 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10 hour shifts

  • Vision adequate for daily and consistent computer use and reading

  • Sitting 6 to 8 hours/day

  • Lifting weights of 0 to 30 lbs. from floor to above shoulders

  • Repetitive use of hands for writing, typing, data entry
