Bevan Koopman

Principal Research Fellow / Associate Professor at The University of Queensland

Bevan Koopman has a strong background in research and development, specializing in Information Retrieval (IR), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Machine Learning (ML). Bevan has worked in various roles, starting with their time as a Research Engineer at the Distributed Systems Technology Centre, where they focused on software tools for digitization and annotation of indigenous multimedia resources. Bevan then worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Mincom, where they developed core Java enterprise infrastructure. Later, they joined Permeance Technologies as a Senior Developer, where they contributed to the development of an open-source Content Management System.

In 2009, Koopman joined the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland as a Senior Software Engineer, where they worked on semantic and spatial search of scientific datasets. Bevan'ssystem was adopted by the Australian National Data Service. Bevan continued their academic career at the Queensland University of Technology as a PhD candidate, specializing in integrating structured medical domain knowledge resources with probabilistic, data-driven IR methods for more effective medical data search and inference. Bevan received an Outstanding PhD Doctoral Thesis Award for their research.

Koopman then returned to the University of Queensland, where they held various roles, including as an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow and as a Principal Research Fellow/Associate Professor. In these positions, they co-led projects related to Health Search, Information Retrieval, and AI in Search. Bevan also supervised PhD students and contributed to the development and application of IR, NLP, and ML technologies to real-world health problems.

In 2014, Koopman joined CSIRO as a Senior Research Scientist, where they led projects applying IR, NLP, and ML to real-world health problems. Bevan contributed to core research in ranking and matching methods, evaluation, user behavior and understanding in IR, and the application of relevant technology to domain-specific problems in NLP and ML.

Throughout their career, Koopman has made significant contributions to the field of Information Retrieval and has a track record of successfully translating research ideas into practical systems.

Bevan Koopman completed their PhD in Data Science at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) from 2010 to 2013. Prior to that, they obtained a BInfoTech (Hons I) degree in Software Engineering from The University of Queensland from 1999 to 2002. Bevan Koopman also attended Emirates International School from 1994 to 1998 and completed the International Baccalaureate program.
