Beginning as the "Internship Program" in 1956 with the opening of the UT Memorial Research Center and Hospital, the graduate medical and dental educational and research programs in Knoxville formally became the UTGSM with the formation of the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) in 1991.
