Emily Anne Smith Ph.D., Mph

Emily Anne Smith, PhD, MPH, currently serves as the Public Health Team Lead at Theiagen Genomics, where expertise in bioinformatics and genomic epidemiology is utilized to support public health laboratories. In this role since January 2022, Emily leads a diverse team, organizes educational sessions for public health personnel on viral pathogens, and has contributed significantly to the submission of over 300,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes for public health applications. Prior experience includes research roles at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, where Emily focused on genomic analyses and vaccine efficacy, and positions at various consulting and health organizations, emphasizing epidemiological research and outbreak surveillance. Academic qualifications comprise a PhD in Comparative and Molecular Biosciences and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota, complemented by a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and History from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
