Mikhala Kotlyar's work experience includes various roles in different organizations. Starting in 1996, they worked as a Program Assistant at International Alert and later as an Evaluation Consultant at Eurasia Foundation in 1997. In 1997, they also served as an External consultant/assistant at Charities Aid Foundation. Mikhala (Mikhal) then joined Vantage Partners as an Associate in 2000 and worked there until 2002. From 2002 to 2012, Mikhala held the position of Associate Director at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. In 2012, they became a Senior Director at Changing Our World, Inc. before working as a Special Assistant (Communication) at New York University's Office of the Provost from 2012 to 2013. Following that, they became an Asst. Director at New York University's Center for European and Mediterranean Studies from 2013 to 2022. In 2022, Mikhala joined Humankind as a Humankind for Ukraine Advisor - Strategic Partnerships. Mikhala (Mikhal) also worked as a Project Consultant at TOM Tikkun Olam Makers for a few months in 2022. At TOM Global, they currently hold the position of Director of Monitoring & Evaluation; Strategic Relations, where they are responsible for various tasks such as providing strategic leadership for grants, overseeing the selection and implementation of a CRM platform, and supporting TOM initiatives to build communities.

Mikhala (Mikhal) Kotlyar has pursued a diverse range of educational opportunities throughout their career. They obtained a Master's in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, where they focused on public administration, policy making, strategic management, and international security. Prior to that, Mikhala earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Wellesley College.
