Deborah Barnes

Deborah Barnes began their professional career in 2001 as a Research Health Science Specialist at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In 2005, they joined the University of California, San Francisco as a Professor. In this role, they conducted research on modifiable risk factors for cognitive impairment and dementia in older adults, developed risk prediction models, and tested interventions to delay onset and slow progression of symptoms. Deborah co-authored over 115 peer-reviewed publications and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011. As an Assistant Professor, their research focused on identification of risk factors for cognitive impairment and dementia in older adults. Deborah received funding from various organizations and developed the first late-life dementia risk prediction index. In 2017, they joined Together Senior Health as Chief Science Advisor and Scientific Advisor.

Deborah Barnes completed their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science - BS in Human Biology from Stanford University between 1983 and 1988. Deborah then earned a Certificate in Science Writing from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1990 and 1991. Deborah went on to obtain a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology & Biostatistics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1995 and 1997, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Epidemiology from the same institution in 1997 and 2001.
