Julian Sommer

Co-Founder, Chairman, Partner & CFO at Toucan

Julian Sommer is the co-founder, chairman, partner, and CFO of Toucan. Julian was previously with South Pole from January 2020 to December 2021 as the senior interim manager for strategy and digitalization. In this role, they were responsible for integrating solutions to scale voluntary carbon markets and direct decarbonization/insetting solutions (outcomes-based payments) on the basis of high quality assurance, transparency, driving carbon+ solutions, that address both the climate and nature/biodiversity crisis, aligned with SBT, net-zero principles. This included digital MRV & registries, towards continuous issuance and digitally integrated verification/3rd party data assurance, as well as IoT-based/direct-sensing solutions for renewable energy/e-mobility transitions, e.g. SHIFT Thailand & Rwanda, carbon-credits & decentralized REC (DREC) finance mechanisms & optimizations. Julian also advised on DLT/blockchain applications for carbon markets, incl. expert advisory of Clean Coin projects.

At South Pole, Julian also worked on the general digital (growth) strategy / ramping up South Pole's digital assets and capabilities. Julian worked with opensurface.io, Energy Web Foundation, AgriCircle, DNV, Crowther Lab, WRI and more to be disclosed later.

Julian Sommer's educational career consists of a MSc in Management Science & Engineering from ETH Zürich, a Blockchain Strategy Programme from Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, a Master Thesis with University St. Gallen in the field of Innovation Management, and exchange semesters at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

They are on a team with Charlie Pool - Head of Business Development and Partnerships, Robert Schmitt - COO, and Marcel Jackisch - Head of Blockchain. Julian Sommer reports to Raphaël Haupt, Founder & CEO.
