Michael Sherman

Director, Robot Simulation Software at Toyota Research Institute

Michael Sherman has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Michael started their career as a Project Leader at Hewlett-Packard, where they led the development of a software package for page layout management. Michael later worked as the Operating Systems Section Manager at Elxsi, overseeing multiple R&D groups.

Sherman then moved on to become the Chief software architect for mechanical simulation at Rasna Corporation and later at Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC), where they primarily focused on the development of symbolic multibody dynamics code.

In 1982, Sherman co-founded Symbolic Dynamics, Inc., where they served as the Cofounder, President, Chief Software Architect, and Consultant. Michael developed the SD/FAST symbolic multibody dynamics code, which has been widely used in various applications.

Additionally, Sherman served as the Cofounder, CEO, and Exec. VP of Research and Development at Protein Mechanics, Inc., a venture capital-funded startup that dealt with protein-folding problems. Michael also worked at Pharmix as the Vice President of Engineering, contributing to the development of physically-based simulation technology for small molecule drug development.

In 2008, Sherman took on the role of Chief Simulation Officer at Xulu Entertainment, a startup company focused on building a physics-based virtual world. Michael was responsible for architecting and implementing the physical modeling and realtime simulation capability for the Xulu world.

Furthermore, Sherman worked at Stanford University, Dept. of Bioengineering, as the Chief Software Architect at the Simbios Center, which was the NIH National Center for Physics-based Simulation of Biological Structures. Michael played a key role in building a national biocomputing infrastructure for medical research.

Currently, Sherman is the Director of Robot Simulation Software at Toyota Research Institute.

From 1974 to 1978, Michael Sherman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
