Assistant Engineer - Highway at TranSystems

Yi (Yuna) Zhang, EIT has a diverse work experience starting with their current position as an Assistant Engineer - Highway at TranSystems since October 2020. Prior to that, Yi worked as a Data Analyst in the Infrastructure Group at RailTEC at Illinois from December 2019 to May 2020. In this role, they provided analyzed and categorized data to the research team and developed a MATLAB code for rail track profile processing. Yi also assisted in determining wheel-track intersection points for wheel geometry revision.

Before their time at RailTEC at Illinois, Yi was involved in the Illinois Solar Decathlon project. From June 2019 to May 2020, they served as the Lead of the Building Envelope & Building Integration Team. In this role, they prepared construction drawings, bill of quantities, and specifications for project execution. Yi also designed an insulation system using 3D hydro-thermal simulation to minimize thermal bridging, moisture intrusion, and air leakage. Prior to this role, they were a Drafter for the same project from September 2018 to May 2019. In this position, they developed a structural BIM model to assist the contractor in conducting shop drawing and procurement. Yi also calculated wind uplift for the design of three independent modulus houses.

Yi's work experience also includes serving as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at The Grainger College of Engineering from September 2019 to December 2019. In this role, they quantified ridership under different bus stop spacing through multivariate statistical simulation in Python. Additionally, Yi compiled and analyzed development and incentive policies of electric buses from 2009 to 2019 in China to determine their impacts on public adoption.

Yi Zhang, also known as Yuna Zhang, has a strong educational background in both civil engineering and physics. From 2018 to 2020, they attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they earned their Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Prior to that, from 2016 to 2018, they studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. In July 2020, they achieved the Engineer In Training certification from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
