Jeff Lievense is CEO of Lievense Bioengineering LLC and retired Senior Advisor to the CEO, Bioengineering & Technology, at Genomatica, a leader in commercial development of biobased process technologies for chemical production. He has decades of industrial metabolic engineering, fermentation process development, and process scale-up experience spanning a range of products, including landmark achievements in the field: 1,4-butanediol (Genomatica), farnesene (Amyris), 1,3-propanediol (DuPont-Tate & Lyle), and indigo (Kodak-Genencor). He was previously lead instructor for a popular UC San Diego short course on microbial fermentation. Jeff earned B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan and Purdue University, respectively. He is a recipient of SIMB’s Raphael Katzen Award; elected an AIChE Fellow; and inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. Jeff continues to advise several companies in the area of industrial biotechnology.
