Nathan Deahl

Inspector General at U.S. Government Publishing Office

As Acting Inspector General (IG) for the Government Publishing Office (GPO), Deahl oversees the Agency’s Office of Inspector General (OIG). GPO OIG provides independent and objective oversight of GPO administration and operations; supporting Agency leadership’s and Congress’ efforts to improve effectiveness, efficiency and accountability. Deahl assumed the role of Acting Inspector General in March 2023 after three years serving as Deputy Inspector General.

Deahl first joined GPO in 2019 when he took af position as the AIG for Inspections at GPO where he built the first inspections program for the GPO OIG. In 2020, Deahl was promoted to the Deputy Inspector General. In this capacity, he ensured all OIG activity was conducted with the utmost integrity and objectivity and worked closely with the Inspector General.

Deahl attended the University of Arizona, earning two degrees in Molecular-Biology and Psychology. Upon graduation, Deahl earned an Air Force commission as a navigator and attended flight school at Pensacola Naval Air Station. In 2001, he was selected to fly the mighty F-15E Strike Eagle as a weapons systems officer. After an injury cut his flying career short, Deahl graduated the Air Force’s Intelligence Officer’s course as the top graduate and was then assigned to Hickam AFB Hawaii. There he served as the squadron’s lead targeting and intelligence planner. In December 2004, after a devastating tsunami hit Indonesia and neighboring countries, Deahl was assigned as the senior intelligence duty officer for the relief mission that followed. From 2005 to 2007, Deahl served as the 13th Air Force’s Targeting Flight Commander.

In 2007, Deahl resigned his commission and moved to Washington D.C. There, he worked for the Touchstone Consulting Group as their lead for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) Chief Information Officer (CIO) engagement. In 2009, Deahl took a permanent government position with NGA responsible for the privacy program and IT policy. Deahl joined NGA’s Office of Inspector General in 2010 as an inspector where he spearheaded the creation of an Intelligence Oversight Inspection program, which was acknowledged as a best practice in the Department of Defense. After promotions to Senior Inspector, Deputy Assistant IG (AIG) for Inspections and, the Assistant IG for Inspections, he was responsible for overseeing several CIGIE and Intelligence Community Inspector General award-winning evaluations (2012, 2017, 2018, and 2019).

Deahl also earned his second master’s in public policy management from Georgetown University in May 2015.
