Elizabeth H. Simmons

Executive Vice Chancellor at UC San Diego

Elizabeth H. Simmons is currently the Executive Vice Chancellor - Academic Affairs at UC San Diego. Prior to this, they were a Member at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) from January 2009 to December 2009 during which they focused on research in particle theory. From January 2003 to September 2017, Simmons served as the Dean of Lyman Briggs College and University Distinguished Professor of Physics at Michigan State University. As Dean, they were the chief academic, finance, and operations officer of Lyman Briggs College. Elizabeth planned and executed a 25% expansion of the student body, along with $6M renovation of teaching laboratories and nearly 50% expansion of the faculty cohort. Additionally, Simmons led a successful drive to return Lyman Briggs from status of a School within another MSU College to the status of a separate College within the university. From January 2000 to December 2001, Simmons was a Bunting Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (Harvard University). Prior to that, they served as Associate Professor of Physics at Boston University from January 1993 to December 2003. Her career began as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Particle Physics at Harvard University from January 1990 to December 1993.

Elizabeth H. Simmons has a Ph.D. in Physics (particle theory) from Harvard University, an A.M. in Physics from Harvard University, an M.Phil. in Physics (condensed matter theory) from the University of Cambridge, and an A.B. in Physics from Harvard University. Elizabeth also attended The Pingry School.
