Margaret S. Leinen

Vice Chancellor, Marine Sciences at UC San Diego

Margaret S. Leinen is the current Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences at UC San Diego. Prior to their current position, Leinen served as the Assoc Provost for Marine and Env Initiatives and Exec Dir Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute from February 2011 to August 2013. Before that, Leinen was the CEO of The Climate Response Fund from January 2009 to February 2011.

Leinen has dedicated their career to understanding and protecting our planet and its resources. As the CEO of The Climate Response Fund, they worked to increase awareness and funding for climate intervention research. Margaret also worked to establish guidelines and a risk management framework for conducting this research. In their current role as Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences at UC San Diego, Leinen is working to further our understanding of the ocean and its importance to our planet.

Margaret S. Leinen completed their PhD in Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island - Graduate School of Oceanography. Margaret then went on to complete their M.S. in Geological Oceanography at Oregon State University. Finally, they completed their B.S. in Geology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
