Ulster County’s School of Practical Nursing (PN) prepares students totake the National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nursing, thusallowing them to begin their career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).Within this program, students take part in classroom study, practicaltraining in a laboratory and hands-on care at several medicalfacilities.Students who become a LPN will be able to seek employment in Acute Care,Long-Term Care, a Residential Facility, Home Health Care, RehabilitationCenters, Medical Offices or Hospice.The admissions process differs depending on your program of choice. Somerequire confidential references, handwritten essays and personalinterviews.Tuition assistance through financial aid is offered through federal,state and institutional grants and scholarships. Qualified nursingstudents are eligible for subsidized tuition assistance throughprogram-specific scholarships.College life is regimented at Ulster. It is a non-smoking campus, andinstructors have the right to deny entrance to students who arrive 15minutes after class has started. Make-up classes or only available if theclass is cancelled due to weather, teacher illness or other unforeseencircumstances. Students who miss class cannot make up a class, nor willthe cost of the class session be prorated.Tuition does not vary depending on residential status, but there is a$100 application fee due with the submission of the admissionsapplication. Practical Nursing candidates must take an entrance exam andinterview with the admissions coordinator before beginning classes.Before beginning normal academic courses, students who are accepted intothe School of Practical Nursing must attend a five day MedicalTerminology class which focuses on reading, writing, critical thinkingand test-taking skills.
