Umpqua Community College was established by a vote of greater Douglas County residents in 1964. Since its founding as a post-secondary education facility it has grown and changed to meet the diverse needs of the community. More than 15,000 students take one or more classes each year, for a full-time equivalent of about 3,000 full-time students.

The board of directors at Umpqua Community College has a wide range of experience in different industries and types of education. The board is made up of the CEO of NeighborWorks Umpqua, the Reverse Processing Manager at Kiel Mortgage, the Vice President of Operations and Partner at Greenleaf Financial LLC, the Operations Manager at Seniors Reverse Mortgage, and the Co-Owner of Loosley Development. All members of the board have a Bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in Health Promotion and Education, Western Seminary in Theology/Theological Studies, or Stanford University Graduate School of Business in Business Administration and Management.
