About the role

UNDO is on a mission to tackle the greatest challenge of our time: climate change. As the Scientific Operations Manager in Canada you will be responsible for the management and implementation of UNDOs measurement techniques across all our Canada sites. There will be heavy involvement in team management to ensure the projects are delivered on time, tasks are assigned appropriately and progress is monitored. We are innovating our approach to Science and Research here at UNDO and are therefore looking for someone that thrives when presented with change, able to think laterally to find solutions. A pragmatic, down to earth and personable approach will be essential.

What you will do

Pioneering in Enhanced Weathering, a world-leading carbon removal technology, at significant scale in Canada you will need to be able to work at pace and be comfortable with delivering within a large degree of uncertainty. You will manage a significant number of relationships across the team and with suppliers and partners, ensuring the successful delivery of our established in-field measurement techniques. You will directly manage our Canada-based laboratory team, field technicians and all of the infrastructure associated with in-field measurement. You will further develop and manage contracts of our measurement approach with our laboratory and academic partners, ensuring that our measurement approach is executed to the standards required to generate quality data that will underpin the production of carbon credits.

About you

We are looking for a highly organised and motivated individual - A self starter who can identify problems and then form a solution with little direction. You will be measured and calm under tight time pressure in a constantly evolving environment. You need to be comfortable with change as the market develops around this emerging technology. The Scientific Operations Manager must be an effective communicator, you need to be able to talk confidently, concisely and with specificity. We aren’t looking for someone who can simply design an attractive Gantt chart, but someone who can organise and tangibly deliver. You will need to be comfortable with finance and managing budgets. You will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning and implementation of ERW measurement approach in Canada

  • Investigate, negotiate and manage contracts with commercial laboratories in order to deliver our measurement approach in support of operational partnerships

  • Form strong relationships with academic institutions and manage our Canadian experiments, ensuring they are delivered on time and with accurate data.

  • Leadership and management of the Canadian scientific operational team

  • Close collaboration with our research and geochemistry teams as they bring innovative solutions into our core measurement protocol

  • Ownership of the Health and Safety requirements in Canada reporting to the Senior Scientific Operations Manager on policies, near misses and incidents

  • Budget management for our deployed measurement approach, working closely with the Senior Scientific Operations Manager for budgetary and resource alignment

Essential:

  • A Degree level qualification or similar.

  • 3+ years previous experience in Project or Operational management role in a technical or scientific industry.

  • A recognised project management qualification (Prince2, APMP, Agile..).

  • An ability to evidence excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent IT skills - specifically G-Suite and a Project management system (such as MS Project, Monday.com, etc..).

Desirable:

  • Experience managing projects internationally.

  • Contract management qualifications.

  • An understanding of the Enhanced Weathering process.

  • Previous experience with agricultural sensors (pH, electrical conductivity, soil moisture).

  • Previous experience with laboratory management.

Working environment

This role will require travel across Ontario to relevant field sites, as well overseeing work at the company’s laboratory located at Queens University, Kingston.
