Matthew R. has a diverse work experience in the technology and union sectors. Matthew began their career at Napier City Council in 2010 as a Corporate IT Projects Assistant. In 2011, they worked as a Service Desk Analyst at both CenITex and Robert Walters. Matthew then joined the Young Workers Centre as a Union Summer Intern in 2017. Matthew later served as a National President (General Section) and a National Executive Member at the Finance Sector Union of Australia starting in 2018. Matthew also worked at UniSuper, starting as a 2IC IT Service Support in 2012 and progressing to roles such as System Administrator, ICT & Security Engineer, Network Services Engineer, Infrastructure and Cloud Engineer, Infrastructure and Cloud Solution Designer, and Technology Governance Lead. Their current position at UniSuper is Manager, Infrastructure & Cloud Planning and Governance. Additionally, Matthew has expertise in various technologies, including Microsoft, Citrix, and PBX and Contact Centre systems.

Matthew R. attended Eastern Institute of Technology from 2008 to 2010, where they pursued a Bachelor of Computing Systems degree with a focus on Computing Systems. In the same year, they also obtained a Diploma of Information and Communications Technology from the same institute. Additionally, Matthew R. has obtained several certifications throughout their career. In 2013, they became a Citrix Certified Administrator for XenApp 6 and earned the ITIL v3 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. In 2023, they completed the TOGAF 9 Foundation and TOGAF 9 Certified programs from The Open Group, and also received a Certificate of completion from ATUI.
