Sofía Betancourt

Sofia Betancourt has held various positions in the Unitarian Universalist community and academia. Sofia is currently the President of the Unitarian Universalist Association since 2023. Prior to that, they served as the Resident Scholar and Special Advisor on Justice and Equity at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee from 2022 to 2023. Sofia also had teaching and administrative roles at Drew University, where they were a Visiting Associate Professor of Womanist Theology and Ethics and later became the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. From 2016 to 2021, they worked at the Starr King School for the Ministry as an Associate Professor, Acting President, and Assistant Professor. Sofia's career also includes a brief tenure as the Interim Co-President at the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2017, as well as serving as an Interim Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno, CA and a Consulting Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Storrs. Sofia previously worked as the Director of the Office of Racial and Ethnic Concerns at the Unitarian Universalist Association and as the Senior Minister at the First Unitarian Church of Stockton.

Sofia Betancourt pursued their education in a chronological order, starting with their undergraduate studies at Cornell University from 1993 to 1997. There, they earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ethnobotany.

Betancourt then proceeded to attend Starr King School for Ministry from 1999 to 2003, where they obtained a Master of Divinity degree, focusing on Divinity and Ministry.

Sofia'spassion for education led their to continue their academic journey at Yale University, where they pursued a Ph.D. from 2009 to 2020. During their time at Yale, they concentrated on Religion/Religious Studies and African American Studies, culminating in the achievement of a Ph.D. degree.
