Chair UN Group Of Human Rights Experts On Nicaragua at United Nations

Jan-Michael Simon serves as the Chair of the UN Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua since May 2022, leading an international investigative body established by the UN Human Rights Council. At the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law, Jan-Michael Simon has been a senior researcher since September 1999, overseeing research on crime and public security across Latin America, and also works as a consultant on transitional justice in the Americas. In October 2023, Jan-Michael Simon briefly held the position of Visiting Professor at Mackenzie Presbyterian University. Previously, roles include mission leader at Open Society Foundations, academic coordinator for the International Max Planck Research School for Comparative Criminal Law, and various consultative positions focused on tackling corruption and human rights violations in Latin America. Jan-Michael Simon holds a State Exam in Law from the University of Bonn, obtained between 1990 and 1994.
