Melissa Fleming currently serves as the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications at the United Nations, a position held since September 2019. In this role, Melissa leads the Department of Global Communications, focusing on strategic communications, multilingual news and digital media services, public outreach programs, and global campaigns. Prior to this, Melissa was the Head of Communications and Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from July 2009 to September 2019, advocating for the world's refugee and displaced populations. Additional experience includes serving as a Senior Advisor and Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General's Transition Team and roles at the International Atomic Energy Agency, OSCE, and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Melissa holds a Master's degree in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University and a Bachelor of Science in German Studies from Oberlin College.
