Andrea Lewis Miller

President, LeMoyne-Owen College at UNCF

Andrea Lewis Miller, Ph.D., made history when the LeMoyne-Owen College Board of Trustees elected her to serve as the college’s 12th president. She took office September 1, 2015, becoming the first woman and the second alumnus to serve as president since the College was founded in 1862.

Miller has more than 20 years of experience in higher education. Prior to taking office at LeMoyne-Owen, she served as chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) in Louisiana where she provided leadership to a merger with Capital Area Technical College. Prior to that, Dr. Miller served for five years as chancellor of SOWELA Technical Community College in Louisiana. She transformed this former technical college into a comprehensive technical community college while leading it through its first SACSCOC regional accreditation. SOWELA’s enrollment increased by 67 percent during her tenure.

Miller is a Memphis native who also served for six years as provost/executive vice president for Academic and Student Affairs at Southwest Tennessee Community College where she was responsible for strategic planning and institutional research. Prior to her leadership role at community colleges, Miller spent several years in academic administration at four-year institutions. She served for six years as vice president for Academic Affairs/dean of faculty at LeMoyne-Owen College, and as an assistant dean in the College of Human and Community Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Miller has acquired over 12 million dollars in grant and contracts to support research, curriculum development and professional development activities in science and technology. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Cell and Developmental Biology. She received a Post Doctoral Fellowship from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She has spent summers engaged in biomedical research at the Marine Biological Laboratories (MBL), Woods Hole, MA and at Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL), Los Alamos, NM.
