Gregory Kammerer

Executive Director at United States Merchant Marine Academy

Mr. Kammerer is a current Senior Executive Service member who began his federal government service in 2005 as an Army Senior Fellow serving in the role of the Director of Stakeholder Engagement in the office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (USD P&R), and as the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Integration in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. His work focused on overseeing the Department of Defense’s implementation of recommendations from the Commission on National Guard and Reserves as well as strategic communications and stakeholder engagement for support of the USD P&R.

Prior to joining MARAD, Mr. Kammerer served as the Director of the Salt Lake City VA Regional Office where he was responsible for 845 full-time employees administering VA benefits and services to 134,313 Utah Veterans and their families. He was responsible for the annual disbursement of more than $998 million in compensation and pension benefits paid to 56,190 Utah Veterans and dependents. Mr. Kammerer was also responsible for the Salt Lake City Veteran Readiness and Employment program, the Salt Lake City Incident Team (completes all potential benefit fraud cases for VBA nationwide), a National Call Center, the nation’s only IRIS Response Center, and the Salt Lake City Fiduciary Hub, which serves 13 western states, Guam, and provides funds management of over $951 million in VA benefits.

An Army Veteran and, Mr. Kammerer had various command and staff assignments as an Infantry Officer until his retirement in 2005.

Mr. Kammerer holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and a Master of Military Art and Science from the United States Army Command and General Staff College.
