Cara Hughes

SVP, Business Development at UnitedLex

Cara Hughes is a business development executive with over seven years of experience in the legal industry. Cara began their career as a managing attorney for Special Counsel, one of the largest managed review providers in the United States. In this role, they were responsible for overseeing a team of 250+ attorneys across multiple jurisdictions in some of the most complicated and high-profile litigation cases of the decade.

During their time at Special Counsel, Cara was instrumental in designing and implementing a uniform and scalable training program for managing attorneys that helped the company provide genuinely consultative managed review services. Cara also led the charge in creating a reporting structure and training modules that allowed the company to capture metrics about their attorney’s day-to-day operations, output, and clients. These insights were crucial for management and growth purposes.

In 2014, Cara was promoted to Vice President of Managed Review Services. In this role, they oversaw the exponential growth of the department, expanding the permanent attorney staff from 15 to 70 people and 1100 contract attorneys.

Cara is currently serving as the Senior Vice President of Business Development at UnitedLex, where they are responsible for driving new business opportunities and revenue growth. Cara has successfully cultivated a loyal clientele that seeks their expertise for their largest and most complex matters. Cara is a thought leader in the industry and is frequently invited to speak at legal conferences around the world.

Cara Hughes attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where they earned their JD in International Law. Prior to that, they completed a BA in International Relations from Washington College, as well as a BA in International Affairs from Université Robert Schuman (Strasbourg III). Cara also holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Northern Arizona University. In addition, Cara Hughes has a certification from kCura in Relativity Review Specialist.

They are on a team with Ryan Reeves - SVP, Chief Client Officer, Litigation and Regulatory, Conor Sheehan - VP, Global IP Business Development, and Christine Hasiotis - SVP, Deputy General Counsel. Cara Hughes reports to Daniel Reed, CEO & Board Member.
